What is Glucosamine?

Glucosamine is a compound found in the body, made from glucose and the amino acid, glutamine. Glucosamine is needed to produce glycosaminoglycan, a molecule used in the formation and repair of cartilage and other body tissues. Production of glucosamine slows with age. In osteoarthritis, cartilage -- the rubbery material that cushions joints -- becomes stiff and loses its elasticity. This makes the joint prone to damage and may lead to pain, swelling, loss of movement, and further deterioration. Since the body's natural glucosamine is used to make and repair joint cartilage, taking glucosamine helps repair damaged cartilage by augmenting the body's supply of glucosamine.

Does Glucosamine work?

Glucosamine research discussed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) speaks to it’s ability to decrease inflammation, increase production of beneficial proteogylcans, and it’s ability for immunomodulation.

• In May 2002 the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in cooperation with sixteen Universities and medical centers, including Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, released the results of the Glucosamine/Chondroitin Arthritis Intervention Trial (GAIT) demonstrating statistically significant pain relief compared with placebo in patients with moderate-to-severe arthritis pain.

• Multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo control study from Europe called the Glucosamine Once a Day Efficacy Trial (GUIDE) showed glucosamine to be more effective than acetaminophen in the relief of pain from osteoarthritis.
